As we travel west we enter the Spiti valley, one of the most sparsely populated regions in the world. The landscape is one of rugged interlocking river valleys and high altitude deserts ,hidden in the shadow of the Himalyas, a stark contrast to the Kinnaur valley from where we have come.
A chunk of Tibet marooned in India .
Here are a few pictures of our journey through this region to Tabu, one of the few villages in this serrated moonscape

Somewhere down that cleft of rocks is Tabu

The rock formations remind us of Cappadocia

A harsh yet enchanting environment

With our tracks that cling to

questionable stability

Rockslides

& loose shale

Thanks Heidenau, your tyres make this possible

Along the way of surreal landscape we stumble upon

settlements that date back to the 8tth century perched high up

abandoned Buddhist settlements

Its a man thing to check out another’s ride…

We have no idea where they are going, but hey, as the boss you get to bring along the office & kitchen on your KTM 390 Duke

A reason for celebration when attempts are made to improve the road

As is this. It ensured we did not have to use

this one

When you see this in the distance you know

Indian road democracy means bigger always gets the right of way

Although I cuss every time we are forced off these narrow tracks

I have the utmost respect for those who have to ply them on a regular basis

A camera does not do justice to the scale and majesty of these surroundings. That’s me at 4 o’clock

that white spec at 5′ o clock is a broken down 4 x4

Which creates its own set of problems when we have to try & pass it

This goat farmer

points to his herd way down in the valley below. One can’t even see them in the picture we took

Like a smile, a wave is universal in what it conveys

The military permit check post with its warning that drivers disregard

En-route to Tabo

One can feel the coolness to the water

Fly me to the moon & let me play among the stones…
“A chunk of Tibet marooned in India”. You have the most amazing way with words. How very apt! Then the one about flying to the moon to play amongst the stones….
That scenery is magnificent! I can almost smell the cool water. It must be the MOST exciting thing in the world seeing those peaks in the distance.
I envy you so. I got too cold when I was in India and headed south so I’m living your journey as if it was my own. Red apples are now definitely on my shopping list – it looks so yummy!!! Even a Steers Burger on your behalf.
Wow you guys look DUSTY!!!!. What breathtaking scenery ,it all seems ages old.
Enjoy….
When we think life is hard; it is paradise to the hardship living in those places – Jan
what an utter remoteness and special beauty in places but horrific roads seem par for the course. Yes what a great apple love Gail
Good luck for the road ahead. rewarding but not easy. Did you expect this?
Hats off to you guys. Rather you than me!
Ouch, that’s a harsh environment, it makes the Southern Namibia area look lush by comparison. Little wonder it is so sparsely inhabited!
Sjoe, what a journey.. Linda, that apple looked yummy:) Mind blowing, breathtaking vistas. Thanks for sharing. Praying for your safety. G xxxx
Surreal landscapes—–they certainly are !! Superb photos letting us FEEL we are there with you. THANKS !!
